Body of Lies
Thursday, Oct. 9
8
Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator) directs Russell Crowe for the fourth time in this action thriller about a CIA operative and his manipulative boss. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the operative in a role eerily similar to his role in The Departed, though he is a good guy this time. Crowe plays DiCaprio’s scheming boss. The film has earned oodles of controversy recently for its similarities to the dealings of our own government in recent years. Carnegie Mellon’s first pre-screening since last year’s flop Smart People, Body of Lies will be shown free of charge to Carnegie Mellon students Thursday. Tickets will be available at the University Center Info Desk and online at UberDuzi.com, though passes do not guarantee admission.

Hancock
Friday, Oct. 10

Will Smith is the titular superhero who has fallen far out of favor with the officials and citizens of Los Angeles. Basically, he’s a hard drinker and sloppy savior who just so happens to save the right person in Jason Bateman because a) he decides to be his PR guy for free and b) he has a hot wife in Charlize Theron. It received average to poor reviews, but since Will Smith headlined, Hancock grossed ridiculous amounts of cash ($600 million) and will be made into a sequel. For those of you who are planning on seeing it, I won’t ruin it, but I will say if you can come through this film and not want to bang your head repeatedly against a brick wall, you have a will stronger than I because the plot may be the most dreadful, coked up, sorry excuse for a storyline I’ve ever heard of.

Hackers
Saturday, Oct. 11
8 10 12
The first major film to star Angelina Jolie, Hackers is a 1995 film that follows the adventures of a group of, you guessed it, hackers. They have cool-ish nicknames, like “The Plague,” “Cereal Killer,” and my favorite, “Zero Cool,” which is probably the least welcomed nickname ever. The plot goes as follows: evil computer genius plots to unleash a mammoth computer virus, our “hackers” get wind of this, so of course they must stop him all while avoiding the Secret Service. Fun Fact: Angelina Jolie and star Jonny Lee Miller were married six months after the film’s premiere and divorced a mere 35 months after that. Bonus Fun Fact: Singer Marc Anthony has a minor role as a Secret Service agent in the movie. Watch the film to see if he actually has any lines.

Wild Things
Sunday, Oct. 12
8 10 12
In keeping with AB’s trend of giving the Carnegie Mellon community a glimpse of nudity at least once per week this year, Wild Things is this week’s Sunday special. Dubbed an “erotic crime film” by some, the movie stars Matt Dillon, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Murray, but most notably Denise Richards and Neve Campbell, who “partner up,” so to speak, at one point in the film. The actual plot follows Dillon’s character, whose life is turned upside down when he is accused of raping two of his students. As characters dig deeper, however, we see that nothing is as it seems. During filming, a dead body was found floating in a river, so crew members called the police, who proceeded to tie the body to the dock to get it out of the way of filming. It was removed after shooting the scene.
