The Wackness
Thursday, Nov. 20
8 10 12
One of the latest indie films hoping to make a splash of Juno-esque proportions is The Wackness, which opened in theaters just three months ago. Starring Ben Kingsley as a therapist and Josh Peck (former fattie from Drake and Josh), a drug dealer and Kingsley’s client. Along the way we meet Josh’s somewhat absurd clients, including a dreadlocked Mary-Kate Olsen for you Full House fans. Set in 1994, the film makes somewhat extravagant use of the setting, making frequent references to the culture of the time, which you may either love or loathe.

Pineapple Express

A pot-heavy plot line may have slashed the budget, but it didn’t cut down the dreams Seth Rogen had of making the movie he’s had written since 2001. Rogen and Judd Apatow team up again in this crime/comedy (crimedy?) that revolves around a certain plant described on urbandictionary.com as “God’s gift to mankind.” You may or may not agree with that definition, but what you can agree on is the utter absurdity and hilarity that is Pineapple Express. If you want over-the-top action, gratuitous use of the “F-word” (190 times!) and stonage out the wazoo, this film is definitely for you.

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
Saturday, Nov. 22

John Cho, Kal Penn, and Neil Patrick Harris return for the second Harold and Kumar movie. The plot revolves around Harold pursuing a relationship with his neighbor. The pair soon find themselves on their way to Guantanamo and, per the title, they escape and soon find themselves in a series of episodes similar to those in the first Harold and Kumar movie. Critical and fan reception was mixed and many believe it does not stand up to the original. Still, the situations Harold and Kumar get into and the crude humor contained within is a perfect follow-up to Pineapple Express for the raucous bunch among us.

Up in Smoke
Sunday, Nov. 23
8 10 12
Hey man, wanna go see a movie, man? The fourth comedy that involves drugs to a fairly high degree (pun intended), this movie week ends with a classic made 30 years prior to the previous three films shown. Widely considered one of the funniest films of the ’70s and the best pairing of the duo, Up in Smoke has no real story to speak of other than Cheech and Chong simply try to smoke as much pot as possible while not getting arrested. And honestly, I think that’s what we all need in our lives, right?
