There is ample and unequivocal evidence that the tobacco industry has used research to exploit and target vulnerable communities (youth, women, sexual minorities, and racial/ethnic minorities). There is also clear evidence that the source of funding for research can have subtle effects on the outcome of that research; this is documented in tobacco, nutrition, and pharmaceutical efficacy studies.
