Discuss “Bush: Neither apologetic nor defensive”

On Monday night, President Bush gave his eighth and final State of the Union address. Dressed in a blue tie, with his American-flag pin securely fastened, Bush faced Congress, distinguished guests, and millions of TV viewers.

This was my first time watching a State of the Union address. I didn’t know what to expect. How would Bush present his time as president? With brutal honesty? With fist-pumping pride?

According to the Constitution, the purpose of the address is to report to Congress, literally, the state of the union, and to recommend measures the president thinks should be considered promptly. President Bush did all of this. He summarized the hardships America has faced tied to war, the economy, and health care, but assured us that...

No WMDs? You haven't been paying attention.

Was that the ONLY reason for going in? No. Three of the reasons were WMD-related. The other, oh, 15 or so were not. Somehow people forget that.

Adults understand that sometimes you have to make decisions based on what you know at the time - usually, in the face of contradictory data. Adults also understand that, sometimes, to take NO action can be a worse action that doing something.

Put in historical perspective, the Iraq war has been a staggering success. A military smashed, law being restored, the Surge producing successes that only the brain-dead can ignore... and a record low number of casualties.

THINK for a minute. There are people out there in the world for whom restraint, compassion, and caring are weaknesses to be attacked. They don't care about the pain they cause - just look at the recent attacks, using mentally-handicapped women to carry bombs into stores. These people need to be stopped, and that's not going to be done by negotiation.

The more weakness and wobbling we show, the more encouraged they are to attack us further.
